Susette La Flesche (a.k.a., Inshata-Theuma or Bright Eyes) became a civil rights activist after the government expelled and imprisoned members of the Ponga tribe. Both she and Thomas Tibbles (a reporter for the Omaha Herald) contributed to the civil rights victories for the Ponga. In 1881, she wore this amazing wool dress when she married Tibbles.
