This is due to the Heaven's Gate Trail East (starting from HWY 6) has way more ups and downs. Mount Ararat trail from the Red Deer Trail is mostly flat until you summit Mount Ararat. Heaven's Gate on the East immediately tackles an unnamed mountain, with lots of ups and downs slurping lots of energy,
