I was sailing on a canal in Ghent with some of my friends during a day trip up to Belgium when I encountered this flag, tied to a stick and shoved into the canal bed. It was such a simple and mundane gesture of solidarity, casually blowing in the breeze, so I snapped a photo. It speaks to the level of acceptance in Belgian culture, yet it’s call for peace alludes to, perhaps, a tension still present within their society.
