Silent Gray Fellow. Dania Beach, FL

1914 HARLEY-DAVIDSON 35CI MODEL 10B

For the 1914 model year Harley-Davidson offered two platforms, a 35 cubic inch single cylinder and a 61 cubic inch twin cylinder model. The single was offered with belt drive, and a chain drive with or without a new 2-speed rear hub. The biggest advancement was their new step-starter which allowed the motorcycle to be started even when the machine was off its rear stand. A 2-speed gear change located in the rear hub was offered for 1914 and 1915 models and was controlled by a small lever located on top of the gas tank. It was the first year for a clutch pedal as well as a brake pedal, however the rider could still activate the rear brake by applying back pressure on the starter pedals. The first Harley-Davidson folding foot boards also appeared as standard issue, becoming a signature item for the motorcycle.

The original Harley prided itself on its refined mode of transportation and marketed the motorbike toward an upscale lifestyle. To this end, they tried for years to engineer a quieter motor. In fact, the first company catalog name for the Harley was “Silent Gray Fellow.”
