Cross-Country Wagon. Lowellville, OH
1953 Pontiac Chieftain De Luxe Station Wagon.
Station wagons once ruled the roost when it came to the ultimate family car. Mostly built on full-size chassis, with seating for anywhere from six to nine, they offered plenty of room for every member of the family and everyone's stuff. Most were big enough to take the family dog along for the trip, too.
This Chieftain features the venerable L-head straight-eight engine that powered many Pontiacs between 1933 and 1954. Development had begun on Pontiac's first overhead-valve V-8, but it would be delayed until 1955, even though the 1953 body and frame were designed and built to accommodate the more modern engine. Pontiac also offered an L-head straight-six. But just as buyers inordinately preferred the shinier De Luxe models, so too did they check the box for the 122hp straight-eight nine times as often as they did for the 118hp six.
1953 Pontiac Chieftain Specifications Base price: $2,744 Other options on this car: Hydra-Matic automatic transmission; power steering; power brakes; illuminated hood ornament; woodgrain Di-Noc exterior trim; master grille guard; front bumper wing guards, chrome-trimmed windshield sunvisor; No-Mar stainless steel fuel door guard; rear fender skirts; prismatic traffic-light viewer
