Dustbowl 1935... (backstory) a history lesson for America

During the 1930s, Nebraska, and most other mid western states, suffered through one of the most serious droughts in its history. In all parts of the state, rainfall was far below normal. The dry powdered soil began to blow, and as dust storms obscured the sun, parts of Nebraska and the Great Plains became “the Dust Bowl" of America. The Hastings Daily Tribune on Saturday, March 16, 1935, reported a severe dust storm in that locality, climaxed by a snow event considered worthy of note even in a state known for the unpredictability of its weather.

My American grandparents had seen enough. My grandfather's farm had blown away; his family was growing but he could no longer count on his crops to feed them. While other country folks were packing up, abandoning their land and heading to California for the chance of work in the agricultural sector, my grandfather and his family headed east to Indiana. It was a long arduous drive but with luck and the kindness of strangers he reached his destination. He was able to restart a normal family life, raising crops and chickens to keep the family nourished. Life wasn't easy but he worked very hard and successfully raised three children before moving to Canada.
