Optical module

 

This is a receiver, with the photodiode connected directly to the fiber, and wirebonded across the gap to the ceramic substrate. You can see a bare die which is probably the first-stage (high speed, low-noise) transconductance amplifier, and the SOIC-8 IC is probably for DC biasing.
