Unique neoclassical building of the Faculty of Law celebrates 80 years

12. 3. 2011 • Author: Martin Archalous • COLUMN: FACULTY •

Architecture and history of the building of the Law Faculty of Charles University are so interesting that they deserve more challenging monograph. Such a view is Kotalík George, rector of the Academy of Fine Arts.

Now he accepted the invitation of the Faculty of Law and met students and academics with architectural peculiarities of their "alma mater", approached (not so lucky) and outlined the history of the building, where he could face further its development. The lecture came at the right moment - this year, this architecturally unique building will celebrate 80 years of its existence.

He protested against the form of the building and Franz Ferdinand d'Este

When, in 1907, he adopted the ingenious architect Jan Kotera contract for a new building for the Charles-Ferdinand University, knew that he signed for the project, which will be paid with interruptions until the end of life. The first proposal was rejected by the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este, which recognized only neo-Baroque style. Kotěra secession "temple of science" swept the heir to the throne of the table. Shortly afterwards, however, he lost his life in Sarajevo and Kotera could continue working. His work, however, interrupted by World War II.

The building of Faculty of Law at the riverside stand for 80 years.

Even in the new Czechoslovak Republic had the architect, his mother half German, a bed of roses. For political reasons, the building suggest another - Czech - architect. This decision raises considerable resentment among the then Kotěrovými colleagues who boycott the competition. Kotera wins as almost the only participant, his work has never misses entirely complete. Despite advancing illness dedicated to the project, all forces and a month after the submission of the plans died.

Our future looked black, at this moment, however, he came into the game Ladislav Machon, another leading Czech architects, disciple and colleague Jan Kotera. Project undertook and led him to a successful end. It was not an easy task. Six of Prague's biggest construction companies must join forces to monumental work brought to life. So I worked on it until the 1931st

Machon when working acted very meticulously and strongly rejected any way modify or finalize the work of his teacher. But it was not always beneficial. Therefore, the building also has "unfinished" look. Neither the artistic decoration was not struck, this time primarily for financial reasons. In doing so, he Kotěra drawings planned series of sculptures in the main atrium (ie. Pool), a large assembly hall was again decorate a mosaic by Max Švabinský depicting the history of the legal profession from the Roman classics to American skyscrapers. From the artistic decoration was realized so little about it but quality; Myslbekova lobby is decorated with a statue of Allegiance on the first floor, we find stone fountains. For inner linings were used marble slabs of the highest quality. The facade is decorated with simple sculptural works with legal issues.

Kotera and Machon chosen few at that time innovative practices that are valued even after years. An example might be ready for a loft attic. Even if the authors had counted on the possibility of expanding the faculty. Their foresight appreciated the faculty management in the 21st century, when new floor actually implemented. Similarly prepared are extensive cellars, which new uses are still waiting.
