Guess That Celestial Object!!!!
For anyone following my photos, you may have realized by now that I'm a fan of unconventional ecology. So why should my last image be any different? I'll give it to you, I'm really stretching this one (all the way to outer space). But despite this picture being 3 white dots, I firmly believe it's my most significant picture yet. This is a picture of Jupiter and some of its moons through a telescope. I get that it just looks like some lights, but it's FREAKING JUPITER, ALL THE WAY ACTOSS OUR SOLAR SYSTEM. So yeah, sometimes less is more. Why is space so darn cool? Many reasons! One reason being that everything we know to be true on Earth about ecology could be turned upside down on other worlds, because we literally KNOW NOTHING ABOUT SPACE. All the stars, planets, and galaxies that we can see make up a measly 4% of the universe.... Take Titan (a moon of Saturn) for instance. On titan, methane exists at a triple point, much like water does on Earth (aka as a liquid, solid, and a gas). This means it's possible for this system to be the basis of life instead of water! Scientists have gone as far as to make a working model for the cell membrane for the hypothetical methane-ethane based cell named an azotosome. What could this life look like? How could differing of essential elemental composition change fundamental properties of the organisms we see and how they live in their habitats? It's crazy to think that ecology on Earth is such an expansive and ever-growing topic that we're still piecing together, and soon we could have extraterrestrial ecology to deal with as well! Who knows what the universe has in store for us.
