Lines of Asymmetry (Concentration)

by Ruben Monda

Statement: Asymmetry. The basis of human beauty and architecture. Asymmetry is near perfection and we as a species seem to love it. Lines are essential and do not lack in any aspect of life, seeing as lines are everywhere we go, especially in photography. Together these two different concepts can form a middle ground, where, a recurrent visual aspect is made beautiful by the refined idea of asymmetry. My concentration will take lines, and transform them into my art subject using asymmetry to unify the photograph.

Explanation: In this miniseries, all of the photos were taken with lines being the main subject. My style is not trying to take basic photos *of* lines, but instead, trying to use the subject lines as asymmetrical as possible. Using lines as the main subject does not make the photo have any togetherness, which is why I incorporated asymmetry into the style so that the photos can be unified through the near-symmetric lines. As seen in my fourteenth photo, lines are the emphasized subject that also brings the entire photo together in harmony. I could have put the character in the center, but instead thought to direct the viewer to the center of the photo and then guide them to the focal point using lines. My point is also proven in my fifth photo where there is a bird sitting on the fence. I feel that this photo really shows my message of symmetry really well. The “z” in the photo is almost perfectly symmetrical, the lines used to create this “z” are influential enough to block out most of the messy background while giving balance to the bird situated in the dead center of “z”.
