John Stegman's Prayer Book, 1703

John Stegmann, also known as Johann Friedrich Stegmann, was originally born in Hesse, Germany about 1758. He had black eyes, dark brown hair and was 5’7” tall. He later became a mercenary and served the British Empire during the American Revolution of 1775 to 1783. After the revolution, he changed his name to John, married Marie-Ursule Choisy, became a Deputy Surveyor for the Province of Ontario and settled in Pine Grove, near Woodbridge. Stegmann died onboard a ship, called the Speedy, when it sank on the way to a trial in Newcastle.
