William Neal, 1962

William James (“Bill”) Neal was born in 1897 in Elder’s Mills. He enlisted in 1916 and joined the 21st Battalion on the front in 1917. Shortly after, he received severe gunshot shrapnel wounds to his back, left leg and left thumb. He was evacuated to England and returned to Canada in 1919. He entered the automobile business in Woodbridge in 1921, before moving to Richmond Hill in 1931. He became a vehicle license operator in 1934 and ran the business with his wife Annie and their five sons. He also served the Town of Richmond Hill as Councillor, Reeve and Mayor. Neal is commemorated in the town with both a street and park named after him, following his passing in 1979.
