Judge James Butler was a resident of Vaughan Township when he enlisted in World War I and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. After returning, he married and moved to nearby Richmond Hill in 1926. In addition to his judicial career, Butler was a devoted member of the Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church, father of six children and served on Richmond Hill’s Police Commission.
