John Gamble, 1850-1857

John Gamble was born in Toronto in 1799, grew up in Kingston and then settled in Etobicoke where he ran a store with his brother. Gamble then moved to Vaughan where purchased a grist and sawmill in 1840 from John Smith. He quickly added woolen mills and distillery. Gamble was known as the “Pope of Pine Grove” due to his aristocratic and unapproachable nature and died in 1873.
