“Local News,” York Herald, Apr. 10, 1879

The Dunkin Act of 1864 was the first piece of prohibition legislation to be passed in Upper Canada. It provided residents the chance to ban liquor in their communities, if thirty qualified electors were in favour. Attempts to bribe local officials were common and success was rarely permanent as another vote could be held, which often resulted in its repeal.
