“Temperance Soiree,” York Herald, Jun. 13, 1862

Temperance soirees were refined gatherings that often included vocal and instrumental music and recitations, some of which were comical. In the 1920’s, as the temperance movement lost support, these gatherings would be replaced by other forms of entertainment such as dance halls and cinema.
