Article by a Son of Temperance Brother of Maple, York Herald, 1859
The Sons of Temperance was a brotherhood that promoted temperance. It was started New York City in 1842 and soon after across the United States and some of Canada. The organization originally had a highly restricted membership and to become a member, a man had to be nominated by another member (this was later relaxed). The club had secret rituals, signs, passwords, and handshakes and focused on espousing the values of love, purity and fidelity. In some respects, the organization also acted as an insurance company, paying the funeral costs for brothers and their wives.
