“Garibaldi,” York Herald, June 21, 1861
Founded in New York, the Independent Order of Good Templars allowed both men and women to join their organization as everyone had equal rights, a progressive view in a time where slavery was still practiced, and women did not yet have the right to vote. After being founded in 1850, there were 350 lodges with a total membership of almost 20,000 people within five years, including the Garibaldi Lodge, no. 486, which was established near Concord.
