Part of a letter from John and Jane Ellerby to their nephew Peter, 1848

In this letter to their nephew, John and Jane describe their life in Vaughan, expressing that there are many local supporters of the temperance movement, “but yet drunkards abound.” The temperance movement was based on the belief that alcohol was responsible for many societal problems.
