“West York Vote,” The Liberal, October 6, 1898

The plebiscite on prohibition was Canada’s first national referendum. It asked citizens whether they were in favour of a federal ban on alcohol consumption. Despite the majority (51%) voting yes, the federal government elected not to proceed, leaving it up to individual provinces to introduce relevant legislation.
