After meeting at Harbord Collegiate Institute, the high school closest to their Jewish community, Henry Levy, David Axler and Murray Cohen enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) together. Pilots served in one of the most dangerous roles possible and many recruits did not see any wartime action. Henry, David and Murray died during their RCAF training, as shown in this article from The Globe and Mail.

In the early phase of the war, groups of friends, relatives, neighbours, colleagues and sports teams would enlist in what was called ‘Pals Battalions.’ These battalions of men – having grown up and worked together – fought and often died together, leaving deep wounds in the villages and towns they left behind.
