A photograph of Lieutenant Addison Alexander (Lex) Mackenzie (1885-1970) standing in military uniform in 1914. He was a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) in 1914.
Addison Alexander Mackenzie and his four siblings were born and raised in Woodbridge. He originally pursued a military career, joining the Governor General's Body Guard (later the Governor General's Horse Guard) in 1904 as a private. Shortly after, he attained the rank of Squadron Sergeant Major.
Addison Alexander received a commission to Lieutenant in 1912. He was transferred to France as part of the fourth Canadian Mounted Rifles in 1915 and awarded the Military Cross for valour at the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
He was promoted to Major before being severely wounded at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. After the war, he returned home and took up farming.
