Russell and his cousin, Reuben John Castator, were residents of Woodbridge before serving in the First World War. Both were lucky enough to make it back home and be discharged after the war ended.
Following the end of the wars, the Canadian government oversaw the large task of demobilizing their troops, offering soldiers vocational training while they waited.
Once back in Canada, the government offered financial support, tried to ensure that soldiers had jobs and reunite families. Still, integrating individuals who had been abroad for years was challenging. It was even more difficult for those belonging to minority groups (including those with injuries) who often did not qualify for social support programs.
