Before enlisting with the fourth Canadian Mounted Rifle Regiment, Bob was a bricklayer and farmer. He followed his older brother William overseas. Bob was first reported killed in action in 1916; however, this status was later changed to prisoner of war. He was originally held at Dülmen before being transferred to Friedrichsfeld, a larger prisoner-of-war camp in Germany.

Censorship made communication extremely difficult during the war – mail could be altered or went undelivered, and many families did not know where their relatives were serving.

Months after the war ended, families had to work with organizations, like the Red Cross, to search through the lists of missing and dead..
