A photograph of Donald Ross Mackenzie standing in his military uniform in 1916.

Born in 1887, Donald Ross Mackenzie was named after his father. He grew up in Woodbridge with four siblings, including his older brother and fellow soldier, Addison Alexander Mackenzie. Donald Ross served with the 12th Militia Regiment of York Rangers for 10 years.

When Canada’s Minister of Militia and Defense Samuel Hughes called for recruits in 1914, many volunteered. Some recruits had ties to Britain and had fought in the South African War or served in the militia, like the Mackenzie brothers, Alexander and Donald.
