Patterson Postmaster Peter Patterson 1865-1871 MG 45

Peter Patterson

Peter Patterson was born in New Hampshire in 1825 and was one of 10 children. Thomas, Peter’s brother, arrived in Richmond Hill about 1850 and Peter shortly after. By 1853, the brothers had purchased Lot 21, Concession 2 (northwest corner of Bathurst Street and Major Mackenzie Road), establishing their company Patterson & Bro. on the site. Peter was also the postmaster in the village until 1871 and president of the Richmond Hill Agricultural Society from 1882-7. After being bought by Massey-Harris, and the plant’s move to Woodstock, the town of Patterson declined and Peter retired in 1891, passing away in 1904. He and his wife had four kids: Elizabeth, Alfred, John, and Susan.
