Thornhill Benjamin Thorne Advocate for Post Office in 1828 MG 45

Benjamin Thorne

A 26-year-old Benjamin Thorne arrived in Vaughan Township in the 1820s, emigrating from Dorset, England and setting up a warehouse that dealt with the export of grain and import of iron. He later purchased the remains of a burnt down mill and renovated it. By 1830, he was operating multiple businesses, playing a key role in the village’s economy. The small village became known as Thorne’s Mills and then Thorne’s Hill, before eventually being called Thornhill. He married Anna Maria Wilcocks in 1831 in Toronto and they had six sons and four daughters: William Henry, Anna Maria, Mary Georgina, John Benjamin, Catherine, Richard, Charles Edward, Horace, Alfred, and Kate. He died in 1848.
