In 1833, he married Anne Line, and they built a home on Lot 24, Concession 5 (on Jane Street, south of Teston Road) in Vaughan. They raised a family of six sons and two daughters. In the 1840s, John considered selling the property and moving further into the bush or returning to Pennsylvania, but nothing came of it, despite making multiple trips to the United States.
