John Williams, n.d. MG 15
John Williams
John Williams purchased the west half of Lots 3 and 4 in Concession 8 (running from Highway 27 to Kipling Avenue, south of Centre Street) for 75 pounds in 1825. After clearing the land, he erected a large log house on it, boasting that he would not marry until he could properly support a wife. John later married Sarah Shunk and they had five children: Elizabeth, David, Mary, Sarah, and Ellen. He was known as “Welsh” Williams in the area as it took him a long time to master the English language well enough to speak it and never learned to read or write, except to sign his name. John was considered the second settler to live west of the Humber River in Vaughan.
