Joshua Oliver House
Joshua Oliver
Joshua Oliver came to Vaughan from England with his wife, Anne Wade. The Olivers’ purchased Lot 20, Concession 3 (southwest corner of Dufferin Street and Major Mackenzie Road) and began building a stone house on the property. Construction was temporarily halted when Joshua Oliver was imprisoned for his participation in the 1837 Rebellion but continued after his release. When the railway came to the area in 1852, it swung around the stone house on the property, taking over part of the orchard. Joshua and Anne’s eldest son, Thomas later took over the farm and Joshua and Anne built a home in nearby Maple, where they lived until their deaths in 1907 and 1898 respectively.
