John and Sarah McDonald
John McDonald and his wife, Sarah MacInnes, immigrated to Vaughan, hailing originally from the highlands of Scotland. John was a sergeant in the British Army after the family moved to New York State, where they lived for several years, before moving to the area. John was granted land in King Township in 1813 in recognition of his services with the Argyleshire Fencibles. In 1814, John and Sarah purchased Lot 19, Concession 3 (near Maple) in Vaughan. John died in 1817 from a fall in his barn and was buried at the Lutheran Cemetery in Sherwood, leaving Sarah to raise their five children. Sarah died in 1845.
