Grapper O'Brien Journal
Mary Grapper O'Brien
Mary was the daughter of Mary Barrett and Revered Edmund Grapper, a rector and squire in England. Three of her brothers served during the Napoleonic Wars, with two of the three buying land in Canada after the wars ended. The brothers arrived in Vaughan in 1825 and Mary followed soon after with other members of her family in 1828. She lived for a time on Lot 38, Concession 1 (almost exactly halfway between Richmond Hill and Thornhill on Yonge Street) and Lot 19, Concession 2 (present day south of Major Mackenzie Drive on Bathurst Street). She married Edward O'Brien in 1829 and the bulk of her diaries, which contain experiences of pioneer life, reside in the Archives of Ontario.
