William Mackenzie
William Mackenzie was born in 1819 in Ross-shire, Scotland and his ancestors can be traced in that area as far back as 1610. He immigrated to Vaughan with his wife, Catherine McFarlane (1821-1864), in 1842. The Mackenzies lived for a few years at Hart’s Corners (located on Major Mackenzie Drive between Pine Valley Drive and Weston Road), before moving south of Kleinburg where William became a keeper of the tollgate. William and Catherine had three children: Donald, Neil and Sara Ann. He died in 1904 and is buried at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Maple.
