The village of Sherwood, originally named Lower Corner, was located at the intersection of present-day Keele Street and Rutherford Road. It is believed that the community developed around Jacob Keffer’s first sawmill, which was built before 1812 on Lot 12, near Concession 4 on the Don River.
Early businesses included two blacksmith shops, a paint shop, a hotel and a store. The store housed the post office, beginning in 1879, with Jacob Henry Snider being the first postmaster. It also sold the first matches in the community 1839. These were sold in bunches of 100 and carefully taken care of, as they cost about 13 cents a box at the time and were considered an extravagance. In addition to matches, the store also sold bulk goods, such as brown sugar, coal, oil, print material, towels, tablecloths, and brooms.
Sherwood was later subsumed as Maple expanded, a change which was exacerbated by the transformation of Keele Street into a four-lane street in 1965.
