Photograph of John H. Thompson

Photograph of John H. Thompson, an aviator in the RCAF during the Second World War, was a lifelong resident of Woodbridge. He grew up in the village and enlisted in the RCAF when he was 20 years old.

Achieving the rank of Flight Sergeant, Thompson saw action overseas, as the RCAF evolved into a military organization, playing a major role during the Second World War. The CAF, the predecessor of the RCAF, recognizes April 1, 1924, as its formation day. However, its origins trace to the Canadian Forces that served in the First World War as part of the British Royal Air Force. In 1923, the CAF became responsible for all flying operations in Canada, both civil and military. In 1924, the CAF received Royal Title and became the RCAF. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the RCAF evolved into a military organization that would play a major role during the Second World War.
