Scan of an article about Marion Orr

Scan of an article about Marion Orr.

Orr served in the Women’s Division of the RCAF, which was established during the Second World War. The RCAF was the first branch of the Canadian Armed Forces to recruit women. These women filled non-combat roles so that male air force personnel could be reassigned to combat. They were initially very limited in the roles they could take on. However, the opportunity to fulfill support positions expanded as the war continued. Women in the RCAF Women’s Division served in multiple theatres and their motto was “We Serve That Men May Fly.” For recruitment, women had to be between 21 to 41 (a requirement which led Marion Orr to fabricate her age on her enlistment papers), pass medical tests and be at least five feet tall, among other criteria. Over 17,000 women served in the unit until it was disbanded in 1946.
