Photograph of RCAF Typhoon in 1945

Photograph of RCAF Typhoon in 1945. The Hawker Typhoon was a ground-attack aircraft that specialized in destroying armoured vehicles and precision ground targets.

It was originally introduced in 1941, succeeding the Hawker Hurricane, and at the time was the only fighter that could catch the low-level German fighters. However, because it flew close to the ground, this also meant that there were more casualties from ground fire. Originally, the plane was equipped with guns, which were replaced in 1942 with bombs and then in 1943, with rockets. The Hawker Tempest replaced the Hawker Typhoon in 1944 and following the end of the Second World War, it was phased out as its specialization was no longer required.
