Part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan focused on educating more than 130,000 Canadian and Allied airmen. To satisfy this need, airfields, schools and other training facilities had to be improved or established, with almost every province in Canada playing host. As a result, nearly 200 training and support facilities were established in about 150 different communities. Pilots went from an Initial Training School to an Elementary Flying Training School, like No. 11 in Cap-de-la-Madeline, Quebec, which was later followed by Service Training Schools, where recruits were separated into fighter and bomber pilots. Pilots then were sorted once again before going overseas, into Advanced Flying and Operational Training Units.
