The 245 Squadron was assigned to assist with the battle over Holland in September of 1944 and provide food and essential supplies to Dutch citizens. German forces had occupied the Netherlands since 1940 and during this time, many Jewish people were sent to concentration camps. Citizens searched desperately for the necessities of life and executions were common, for even the smallest infractions, including breaking curfew. The liberation of the Netherlands was known as Operation Veritable and by May 5, 1945, was completed. The Netherlands sends tulips to the Canadian government every year since 1945 to recognize their assistance with liberation from the German offensive.
