Nose art was painted on the front fuselage of the plane and often evoked memories of home and peacetime for soldiers, with images of famous actors and flags being common. The practice began to identify Allied aircraft; however, it later evolved to express pilots' individuality. Nose art contravened the military’s preference for uniformity, and as such, was never officially approved. However, the regulations against nose art were also never enforced.
