Photograph of Norda Bennett
Photograph of Norda Bennett. Norda Bennett was a major in the Women’s Division of the RCAF.
She studied English and Philosophy before pausing her studies to join the RCAF in 1943. It is believed that Norda was encouraged to join due to her parents’ strong leadership within the Jewish community. Thornhill had a strong Jewish community during the twentieth century, with many members commuting into Toronto for school. The Women’s Division of the RCAF was disbanded in 1946 and in 1951, women were officially allowed to join the RCAF.
