In addition to carrying ammunition, these pouches often held grenades, explosives and any other items a soldier could use, such as gloves. The amount and type of ammunition each pouch contained depended upon the strength of the soldier carrying it, the expected actions of the soldier and the ability to restock, as supply lines could be unstable. Soldiers could also be expected to carry specialized ammunition for heavy weapons, spreading the burden among many people. Too little ammunition threatened the mission, while too much limited mobility.
