The Typhoon had a maximum speed of over 650 kilometres per hour and a range of 1,600 kilometres. About 3,000 were built and they earned a reputation for effectively destroying German tanks and missiles. There were two types of Hawker Typhoon: 1A and 1B. However, both were found to be hard to start, particularly in cold weather. Additionally, the design of the Hawker Typhoon 1A resulted in problems with large amounts of carbon monoxide entering the aircraft cabin. With the Hawker Typhoon 1B, this issue was corrected, but others remained related to oil cooling, engine problems and structural issues. For these reasons, the Typhoon was replaced with the Tempest a couple years later.
