After he earned mentions in dispatches, Thompson was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (CVSM), and Operational Wings. The CVSM was awarded to members of the navy, military and air force who served for 18 months between September 1939 and 1947. Operational Wings were given to members of the Armed Forces who had completed at least 30 missions. The latter was based on the badge of the RAF and is inscribed with the motto of the air force, “Per Ardua Ad Astra,” which can be translated as “Through adversity to the stars.”
