During the First World War, 152 Canadian pilots earning the title of ‘aces’ (those with five or more victories), three Victoria Crosses and more than 200 Distinguished Flying Crosses. The first CAF Unit was formed by the renumbering of 81 Squadron of the RAF into 1 Squadron CAF in November of 1918, just after the end of the war. In the postwar period, the CAF continued modestly, becoming the RCAF in 1924. The outbreak of the Second World War led to an increase in spending and many personnel enlisting in the RCAF.
