Photograph of Marion Orr

Photograph of Marion Orr.

Orr was fascinated by planes at a young age, regularly walking kilometres to watch the nearby airfield, scrimping and saving to pay for private flying lessons as soon as she was able. Marion earned her private pilot’s license in 1940 and became an aircraft inspector at De Havilland Aircraft of Canada. She then passed several tests at the Royal Canadian Air Force Station in Trenton, becoming qualified as a flying instructor. During the Second World War, Orr served as an Air Transport Auxiliary and was the second female licensed control tower operator in Canada, at the Goderich RCAF base.
