John Thompson’s service ended in March of 1945, and he considered himself lucky to return home. At the beginning of the war, the RCAF had about 4,000 personnel. However, this number grew substantially between 1939 and 1945. During this period, 249,000 men and women served, operating 86 squadrons. Out of this number, more than 17,000 Canadians perished, including while on operations, in training or as prisoners of war.
