Bryson School

School Section No. 10

The Bryson School, Upper Sixth School (School Section No. 10), was located on the northwest corner of Lot 30, Concession 5. The first school was constructed of logs, with the second being built of bricks. This land was purchased from Robert Phillips for $100 by the trustees Neil Malloy, Alexander Cameron and Isaac Murray. According to an old minute book from 1869, each student paid six cents a week and the new building could sit over fifty pupils. In the winter, the school was heated by a stove in the middle of the room, with older boys only attending during these cold months. This was because at other times of the year they were required at home to assist with farming. The Township took over the building in 1960 and it was later sold to Reverend B. F. Andrews and his wife, who converted it into a home. The image above shows the Bryson School after being sold to the Andrews family, with the original structure in place.
