Thornhill School
School Section No. 1
In the early 1800s, the communities of Thornhill and Langstaff were closely linked. Thus, the first public schoolhouse to serve the Village of Thornhill, was in Langstaff, though there were several private schools located in Thornhill. In 1847, a brick school was built in Thornhill for the children in the south end of the villages of Markham and Vaughan, and was known as “Union S.S. No. 1”. The original building is pictured above. In 1885, when the County of York reported on the schools in Vaughan Township, the average attendance from Vaughan was 26 children and the teachers were R. O. Harvey and Annie Hendrie.
