Vellore School and Vaughan Township Hall, ca. 1880
School Section No. 9
The Vellore School (School Section No. 9), pictured above with its students in ca. 1880, was built on Lot 17, Concession 5. The first teacher was Mr. Corrigan, who boarded with different families in the village. The school consisted of logs, with no desks. Instead, the students sat on benches and the building was heated by a fireplace. In 1868, a frame schoolhouse was constructed and upgrades, including a box stove, double desks, and a library were installed. Subjects such as reading, writing, arithmetic, history, geography, history, spelling, and music were taught. In the 1920s, the school was raised and bricked, with a cement basement being built underneath the school and a furnace was installed. Electric lighting was also installed. The school closed in 1964.
